Misawa Medical Industry Co., Ltd. has developed a "Low Dead Space Needles" that able to reduce the amount of medicinal liquid remaining inside the syringe, and will start selling them in Japan from April 1, 2021. This makes it possible to reduce the "dead space" in which the liquid remains in the syringe without using a special syringe. Moreover it is possible to provide 6 shots from one vial of the new COVID vaccines manufactured by Pfizer Inc. *1
This product minimizes the dead space on the syringe side of the resin made hub that assemble the needle and syringe. It able to remain the amount of medicinal liquid about 0.03 ml, compared to the conventional needle and syringe and it can be reduced to about one-third of the remaining amount (about 0.09 ml) * 2.
We plan to manufacture about 300 million pieces, for both inside and outside Japan by March 2022.
Misawa Medical Industry Co., Ltd. has expanded its needle production facilities in June 2020, increasing its annual production capacity from 1.9 billion pieces to 3 billion pieces. Currently, we are strengthening the production system for vaccination needles while utilizing the production lines of other products, and we will continue to make efforts to facilitate vaccination.
*1: Some syringes cannot be assembled with the product depending on size of the inner diameter of the tip of the syringe.
